Younique - Royalty - Detoxifying Mask

Charcoal masks have been around for ages. They come in jars, squeeze tubes, sample sizes, full size, you name it. The bamboo charcoal mask that I'm reviewing today, is from the Younique brand, under the newer Royalty skincare line.

Rejuvenate and reveal the natural beauty of your skin! This bamboo charcoal mask absorbs toxins and impurities while reintroducing oxygen to your skin with a foaming, tingling sensation. The gentle exfoliating properties remove dead skin cells, and tree oils and vitamins help nourish and condition skin.
This is not your typical clay mask. This one bubbles up! I've never tried a mask that bubbled like this before, so I thought that was pretty cool. I know there are some Asian skincare brands that do offer bubble masks as well, so depending on how well this works for me, I may try another in the future.

The directions say to wash your face, as you normally would. Then apply a generous amount to moistened skin. Leave it on the skin for 5 minutes, and then wash off. So that is exactly what I do.

As you can see, it bubbles up a fair bit. I tend to leave it on for a little longer than 5 minutes, because I want to be sure it's working. I'm not entirely sure if I like the feeling of the bubbles on my skin. I like that they are there, because you can feel it, and it's kind of an assurance that it's doing something. But at the same time, it feels odd.. and itchy. When I wash it off, I don't find that it's irritating my skin at all, so I'm not sure if the "itchiness" is just my mind playing tricks on me and it's actually the carbonation of the mask?

I've been using this for a few months now, and I can't say that it's doing anything really for my skin. It feels interesting, and is nice to incorporate into a night of pampering, but I wouldn't repurchase this in the future. It's quite pricey ($59 Canadian/$49 US) and I don't feel like it improves my skin at all.

I've also noticed that if I store it for about 2 weeks, and then go back and use it, that there are bubbles sitting inside the middle of the jar. I think that means there is condensation? And then that makes me worry that it's going to spoil before I can even finish it. I try and remember to use it, but there are just other masks that I prefer over this one, and therefore use more often.

Also, it seems to leave a black residue on my skin. When you remove it from your face, your face looks clean. But then I take a cotton pad and use a toner, or even micellar water, and this black residue always comes off on the cotton.

So, to end this. I would say this is a pass. I wouldn't repurchase it in the future, and you can probably find something very similar for a much cheaper price. I would say that is more of a gimmick than something beneficial to your skincare routine.
