Monthly Favourites - May 2017

This is still a somewhat new series on my blog, I just started it last month! I think it's a great way to share which products I've been reaching for the most during the month. Maybe we have some similar monthly favourites?!

Topbox - May 2017

Topbox is probably the most affordable subscription service that I have ever subscribed to. It's only $12 a month, which means in Ontario it only comes to $13.56 after taxes. Super affordable. Especially for those who aren't looking to spend too much, while getting to try new brands. They usually only send sample sized products, and a lot of skincare. So if you're looking for mostly makeup, or full size items, I'd recommend Boxycharm instead. Or even Ipsy. There generally isn't a theme of the month either.

Each month we are given the opportunity to wish for a prive box. What that is, is a box featuring a specific brand. First let's take a look at what our prive options were for May.

The lilac tree in our backyard has finally bloomed! If you follow me on Snapchat or Instagram then you would have seen me posting about it. They smell absolutely wonderful, and I wish they would last year round, it's too bad they only bloom for a few weeks and that's it! I cut a couple off and brought them inside to put in a vase. I love them!

The Survivor Game Changers finale episode was on Wednesday night! 3 hours long! So much happened in the first hour, hour and a half. It was crazy! If you watched, then I kind of suspected that was going to be the final three. I don't want to ruin anything if some of you haven't seen the episode yet! I was rooting for the winner and I'm glad out of the final 3 that they won. It was crazy with all of the idols being turned in at once and the person without an idol got sent home with 0 votes! It was announced that the next season will be out in the Fall and the theme is Heroes vs Healers vs Hustlers.

Have you checked out the Sephora sale section? There are a ton of Tarte and Estee Edit products that were added recently. I ended up ordering a Tarte lipstick for $12, and a pack of Sephora brand makeup remover wipes for $6! I figured even if I'm not the biggest fan of the wipes, they work great for swatches and where else can you find wipes for $6? I'll do a separate review on the lipstick! I'm always impressed with Sephora's shipping as well (when there isn't a sale) because it comes so quickly. I ordered them on Wednesday, and they were out for delivery on Thursday morning!

I've mentioned in other Five on Friday posts that my boyfriend and I have changed our diet to low carb. I love carbs, so it's been hard but as time passes it's getting easier. Of course I still have a craving for ice cream or french fries every so often, but I have to remember that I've been doing well so far, and I just feel so much better when I'm not eating those types of foods. I'm down 13 lbs in just over a month, and I just feel less bloated. I still have some ways to go but theres no rush because we need to do this long term. Anyway, that wasn't my point to this section! I made a low-carb "bread" using almond flour, eggs and some other ingredients. I will post the recipe. I wasn't the biggest fan of this, but my boyfriend really enjoyed it, and he took it to work over a few days. I think we might play around with the measurements to see if we can improve it. It's almost pound cake like in texture (definitely not in taste though lol) and I could see if you sweetened it up a little, it would taste good with some berries and whipped cream!

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2Cup Almond Flour
  • 6Large eggsSeparated
  • 4tbsp Buttermelted
  • 3tsp Baking powder
  • 1/4tsp Cream of TartarIt’s ok if you don’t have this
  • 1 pinch salt
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375.
  2. Separate the egg whites from the yolks. Add Cream of Tartar to the whites and beat until soft peaks are achieved.
  3. In a food processor combine the egg yolks, butter, almond flour, baking powder and salt. Mix until combined. This will be a lumpy thick dough until the whites are added. Combine in two parts to ensure thorough mixing.
  4. Add 1/3 of the beaten egg whites to the almond flour mixture and process until mixed.
  5. Add the remaining 2/3 of the egg whites and gently process until fully incorporated. Be careful not to overmix as this is what gives the bread it’s volume!
  6. Pour mixture into a buttered 8×4 loaf pan. Bake for 30 minutes. Check with a toothpick to ensure the bread is cooked through. Enjoy! 1 loaf makes 20 slices.

Sephora - VIB Spring Haul

Sephora had their VIB Spring Sale during April. I ended up making two small orders, although I didn't need anything. I figured it was the time to try something a little more pricey, so I get good use of the 15% savings.

Younique - Royalty - Time Correcting Night Cream

Make your beauty sleep count with a velvety night cream that helps to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Whey protein improves the appearance of your skin’s firmness while a vitamin A derivative hydrates and moisturizes skin.

Younique - Royalty - Detoxifying Mask

Charcoal masks have been around for ages. They come in jars, squeeze tubes, sample sizes, full size, you name it. The bamboo charcoal mask that I'm reviewing today, is from the Younique brand, under the newer Royalty skincare line.

It's Victoria Day long weekend in Canada this weekend, which means the "unofficial start of summer" Most people have Monday off of work! A lot of people go camping, but it gets so chilly at night! We don't really have any plans, last year we went to my cousins house for a barbecue and to hang out and have some alcoholic beverages. I haven't heard anything about this weekend, although it's usually last minute when we do those sorts of things! Do you guys have anything planned for the long weekend?

I recently placed an order with Essence Cosmetics for a bunch of nail polish! I've been obsessed with the Essie gel couture nail polish that I picked up about a month ago, but I decided I needed some more spring/summer shades. As if my nail polish collection isn't enough. Anyway! I love how affordable these gel polishes are from Essence, and they really do last a reasonable amount of time on your nails!

Do you guys happen to watch Survivor this season? I used to watch it back in the early 2000's when it first came out, but over time I lost interest. I ended up watching last season, and then again this season with the game changers. I'm so surprised over who went home Wednesday night! I won't say who because I don't want to ruin anything. Well, the first person I wasn't surprised about... but I wasn't expecting the second! The three hour finale is on Wednesday May 24th!

Back during the VIB spring sale for Sephora, I received this sample of DevaCurl SuperCream Coconut Curl Styler... and I have to say, I have been loving it! I've used it already about 4 times, and I can probably get another 4-6 uses out of it still! It's somewhat of a thick cream, but it doesn't leave the hair greasy. My natural hair is a weird texture.. somewhere between wavy and curly I'd say. I find this product brings that natural texture out more, without being weighed down by something like gel or hair spray. You know that crunchy look? It doesn't do that! I will towel dry my hair and then apply this while my hair is still damp. When I prefer to leave my hair natural looking, I just let it air dry. I'm seriously considering a full size bottle.. it's a little pricey at $34 Canadian on Sephora's website. If I do decide to purchase it, I will try my best to hold off until the next VIB sale, which is generally in November.. or wait until there is a good coupon!

Has it been hot where you are this week? We actually had to turn our air conditioning on for two days, because it just got so warm and humid! I like the heat, but I hate the humidity! It is supposed to cool down a little again during the weekend, with some rain.

Boxycharm - May 2017

Boxycharm is a subscription box service, that sends full size and deluxe sample size items to you each month. I've noticed majority of the time, you will get full sized products, and you receive 5 each month. It is $21 USD a month, plus shipping. There are discounts if you sign up for 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months. I originally signed up for 3 months, and it renewed for another 3 months automatically. Everyone generally gets the same box each month, with a few variations such as lipstick colours. Or a lipstick vs lip gloss. That being said, let's take a look at what I received for my May Boxycharm!

TheFaceShop - Makeup Products!

I would say that the past year, year and a half, I finally accepted brow products. I never used to fill mine in, and in the distant past, I would just spray some hair spray on a spoolie and keep my brows in place that way. Eventually I discovered brow gel, and I finally realized what I was missing out on. I've seen there are powders, pencils, gel, mascaras, etc. all for your brows. Today I'm going to be trying out two brow products from TheFaceShop!

Small Lush Haul

I kept putting off an order to Lush, because I wanted all of the things. I only really needed one item, but with so many new products coming out for Easter and Mother's Day, I knew there were other things I would want to try. I ended up placing a small order, without going too crazy!

If you saw my post last Friday, then you would have seen that I was asking for some help with toning my hair. I ended up with a few choices! I had some light blue shampoo from a few months ago. I ended up putting it in my hair while it was dry, and then washed it out after about an hour. My hair did feel a little dried out - but it helped... a little. I still wasn't completely happy with it, so I decided to splurge on the Manic Panic Ultra Violet. I mixed it with a TON of conditioner. After I washed my hair with shampoo. I towel dried, and applied the Manic Panic/Conditioner concoction all over my head. And surprisingly, it worked very well! There were a few spots I missed, but overall, it really worked! I ended up purchasing Daddy-O shampoo from Lush to give it a try and review. So hopefully between the purple shampoo, and this new purple hair mask idea, it will keep the brassiness away! I've read that you can also put that conditioner mixture into a bottle and use that as your conditioner in the shower to keep it maintained. Such great ideas, and I will have to look into finding a bottle to do just that!

Did you see these posts that Jerrod Blandio, the owner of Too Faced made on Instagram? There's going to be another peach palette, but in MATTES! I probably don't need it... okay, I don't need it... but I will probably get it because I have no self control! When he posted just the outside of the palette, I was wondering if it was going to be the same shades in the Sweet Peach palette, or a whole new palette of different colours? I can't wait! I wonder if it will smell just like peaches as well? I love the packaging of this one, I kinda wish they did this with the original Sweet Peach palette.

I just started to watch The Handmaid's Tale. I am hooked! So hooked that I watched all 5 episodes in two days. It's scary to see the events unfolding, and what these girls have to go through. I also downloaded the e-book. I haven't decided if I will read along with the show, or wait until the show is over. But either way, the show is very interesting to watch, and I will definitely be reading the book at some point! It also was announced that there will be a second season.

I also mentioned last week in my Five on Friday post, that I had an employer interested and that I needed to complete some testing in order to move forward. Well, my test is scheduled for May 16th! I was a little surprised to find out that it is done online at home, unsupervised. I thought it was going to be in person and likely Downtown Toronto. So that takes a little stress off, but they sent along some sample questions - and theres only 4. The whole test is close to 70 questions, so I feel like 4 isn't really enough to prepare. But they aren't too hard, so fingers crossed that I can pass!

I know you're all probably sick of hearing about Scentsy on here, but I like to share the new promotions going on, just in case someone would like to know! Anyway, Scentsy announced that they were releasing a new fragrance collection on May 11th. It ended up being fragrances inspired by La Habana. 5 new scents were released. They are selling for $5 US/$6 Canadian each... or you can bundle them for $20 US/$24 Canadian... so you're pretty much getting one bar free! And there is a bundle where you receive a burlap carrying bag for them as well. The new scents and descriptions are as follows:

Cafe Cubano - Share your secrets and uncover new mysteries behind a backdrop of roasted coffee, exotic almond flower and sandalwood.

Flor de Mariposa - Stumble onto a secluded garden and make it yours with romantic jasmine roused by juicy grapefruit and white plum.

Habana Vieja - Step inside history and take a stroll through bustling streets redolent with tobacco flower, amber and vanilla.

Pastelitos - Stop for a treat on the way to somewhere magical with luscious pineapple, lime and a splash of dark rum.

Playa de Varadero - Find a new perspective where the sand meets the sea, on a sweet tide of sugarcane, bergamot zest and fresh Havana lily.

I can't wait to give these a smell! As usual, they are limited edition and while quantities last!

FTBBeauty Haul

I had never heard of FTBBeauty before, but a member of the Canadian Beauty Blogger group that I am a part of, shared that they were having a 40% off sale. I found out that they carry a lot of brands that are hard to find in Canada, and sell them for Canadian dollars... so no conversion rates! Which is awesome because our dollar is not so great. Unfortunately, they announced that they will be closing shop, which explains the 40% off sale.

Happy May! We're officially closer to summer! I can't wait for the warmer weather! Being able to go to my boyfriends cottage, having bonfires, getting to go to the beach! It's been way too long since we have been able to enjoy a weekend away like that, so I'm really looking forward to this summer!

I ended up going on Tuesday to get my hair lightened. I don't know if its because I had red dye previously in my hair from last year, or what, but man... orange will not fade from my hair at all! I ordered a darker purple shampoo from Lush, so hopefully that comes soon and I can try it on my hair. If not, I may need to try a hack. I've seen people online post that they mix Manic Panic Ultra Violet non-permanent dye, into a TON of conditioner, and use that as a toner.. and that cuts the yellow/orange brass from the hair. I am debating getting it lightened once more, but I'm not sure if it will help. I will need to ask hair dressing friends - whats best? Just to re-bleach the area, or tone it? It's a little hard to see in the photo, but the middle section is orange/brassy and the ends are like white! I'm really hoping some purple shampoo will help.

The diet is going well so far! We officially started April 18th, and from then until the end of April, I lost 5.4lbs. Obviously it's all water weight. I've stalled a little since the end of April, but I think I need to up my water intake, and try to get some more movement into my day. Hopefully May will go just as well, or even better!

~ F O U R ~

I got contacted this week by a potential new employer! I'm excited! The company requires some testing before you move forward, so they will be contacting me next week with a date and time that I need to write the test. It will all be multiple choice - which I hate because it makes me double think myself so much! Anyway, I'm hoping it goes well, and that the location is close to home. I've got my fingers crossed! I really need this!

I finally finished reading All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda. Here is a little blurb about it that I found on Goodreads.

Like the spellbinding psychological suspense in The Girl on the Train and Luckiest Girl Alive, Megan Miranda’s novel is a nail-biting, breathtaking story about the disappearances of two young women—a decade apart—told in reverse.

Like nothing you’ve ever read before, All the Missing Girls delivers in all the right ways. With twists and turns that lead down dark alleys and dead ends, you may think you’re walking a familiar path, but then Megan Miranda turns it all upside down and inside out and leaves us wondering just how far we would be willing to go to protect those we love.

I found it really interesting, and as I read it, I didn't want to stop. Of course it took me some time to finish because I have it on my phone in a book reading app instead of a physical book, and I get distracted while on my phone.. haha. But it took a lot of twists, and I was not expecting that ending at all. Definitely a good and easy read. If you're into mystery thrillers, I'd recommend this!

April 2017 - Empties!

Another month has ended, and that means... it's time for empties! I love these kinds of posts! I really enjoy reading them from others, to see what they used up and liked... and also writing them! I can go back and see what I used, and if I actually liked it or would repurchase. Anyway, let's just get into it, because I have a lot this month!

Monthly Favourites - April 2017

I've decided that I wanted to add a new type of post to my blog. Monthly favourites! I believe when I first started to blog, I did begin to write them. But as time went on, I stopped for whatever reason. So, we're going to start writing them again! These were my favourites for the month of April!
